Upping Your Instagram Game in 10 Easy Steps

Taking a selfie might seem like a straightforward process, but the truth is, getting the lighting, your pose, making sure your makeup is true to color - it's all complicated! But these 10 steps will up your selfie game immediately and help you build your business in a major way!

1. FIND A LOCATION

We love shots in front of studio walls OR in front of backdrops that don't take away from the makeup but keep us within my color palette. This keeps the focus on my face, keeps my feed cohesive, with a lot of matching tones and colors. It seems like a lot of effort but it’s actually not. And if you don't feel like you have this in your house, create it! Purchasing a backdrop or sheet of marbled or solid colored paper can do wonders for a backdrop or flatlay background!

2. LIGHTING

Even if you don't feel like you have the perfect backdrop, lighting can make or break the shot. Natural light is best for selfies because it will always show the makeup true to color. When we're not in a studio setting, you'll notice that we try to find a great natural light source and we try to avoid having too many shadows anywhere on my face!

3. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

Nailing just the right picture can be hard! You'd think with all the instastories and photoshoots we do that Ryan and I would have this nailed - but not so! We know what shots work best but we always surprise ourselves. We do everything from up close shots of final makeup looks to detailed shots of eyes, lips, and other areas we wish to highlight. You know what wins every time? Taking a snap of you doing everyday things while wearing the makeup you love!

4. GET A BLUETOOTH REMOTE

Being able to shoot pictures yourself is so MAJOR! Serious game-changer and makes it so you can get all the shots you need without enlisting your 4-year-old, your instahusband, or your dog.

5. SET TO 3:4

If you plan to upload your picture directly into Instagram, setting your photo to 3:4 (taller than it is wider) will ensure that you take up the most amount of real estate when someone scrolls to your picture in their feed. When it shows up n your profile IG will still crop it when you're looking at your entire gallery so make sure your subject is still centered!

6. SHOW PERSONALITY

Smile, frown, pull a funny face - don't be afraid to show your personality in your photos! Even if you're doing a flatly, you can show your personality using personal props - a clutch of yours, something you hold dear, or even your favorite LipSense® if you're a TRUE addict!

7. TRY DIFFERENT ANGLES

Is your straight on pic just not working? Try taking some from a little above or a little below. Different perspectives make a huge difference AND may give you the opportunity to show off something else you didn't know was focus-worthy!

8. GRAB THE FAM!

Whether your family is made up of you, hubby, and the kids, or you're a puppy parent, or you still live with the 'rents (parents), or you live with the best girlfriends ever, think about including them in your pictures! People want to see your life and that means they want to see the people in it!

9. TAKE 10 PICS TO GET 1 WORTH POSTING

Have whoever is taking the pics keep snapping all while you’re making small, slight movements. This will give you a nice variety of pics and poses to choose from. (also an awesome way to find out your best angles!)

10. DETAILS - TIME TO SPILL!

Don’t wrap your mini shoot without getting a few pics of your jewelry, bag, and shoes (makeup area, house, you get our drift) so you’ll have even more gorgeous pics to post! People don't just want to see and buy your makeup. They want to buy and see you! They want to see how YOU put your entire look together: how you choose the best eyeshadow, that goes with the perfect understated blush, and how you tie it all together with that custom lip color! They're basically looking for permission from you to make a statement with their own makeup!
